Akida Update

I just got this from the CE department chair at Biola, Richard Leyda.

I just talked to Jeff Sanchez and he had tried to get into see Akida, butthey are only letting family in (and a few pastors).Evidently, he is conscious but does not have feeling in parts of his bodyand they are afraid it was a stroke. Jeff said he was goingto try to get in Sunday/Monday and would let us know. I told him to tellAkida that we were all praying for him.

Another email update - good news:

Hi Folks,

I called the hospital this morning to check on Akida and had a nice conversation with Akida's Mom. She confirmed the earliest report that what Akida had was a ruptured brain aneurysm that bled into his brain. His condition has improved enough that he has been transferred from ICU to something they call "sub-ICU". He is still having periodic difficulty breathing on his own, so he is hooked up to a ventilator via a tracheostomy (a.k.a. 'trach') tube inserted into his throat. Because of the tube he is still not able to talk. The staff is planning to install a valve on the trach tube some time today which will allow him to do a little speaking. According to his Mom Akida now has the feeling back in virtually all of his body. The doctors say that he has no permanent brain damage and that he will make a "full recovery", although it will be a slow process.

I told her that many of us at Biola love Akida and are praying for him, for her, and for the rest of the family on a daily basis. She said that she is very grateful for all the care and the prayers. She said she can "really feel the prayers."

I asked about visiting and she said that it is still too soon for visitors, and both she and Akida would prefer that we continue to hold off on the visits. We exchanged phone numbers so we can keep in touch, and she said she'd let me know when visitors are welcome. Of course I'll pass that along to you all, as well as any more updates I may receive.

Thanks for your concern and prayers for Akida and his family. It is a real testimony to the family at this time.
